Community members wave the Indian flag high during Hobart's Christmas Pageant, showcasing the spirit of multicultural celebration

Hobart’s recent Christmas celebrations were marked by a unique blend of cultural diversity and festive cheer, highlighted by the participation of the Indian community in the city’s renowned Christmas Pageant. The event, held on Saturday, 23 November 2024, featured over 40 vibrant floats, including a debut appearance by the beloved children’s character Bluey, which drew an estimated crowd of around 35,000 spectators.

Among the diverse participants, the Indian Festivals Association Inc. (IFEST) played a significant role in showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Indian community. Devi Sharma, serving as the Public Relations Officer for IFEST, expressed heartfelt gratitude to all contributors, particularly acknowledging Dr. Navpreet Kaur, Honorary Consul of India, for her inspiring presence, and Manohar, President of IFEST, for his exceptional efforts in organising the community’s involvement.

The collaboration extended to the All Indians Association Inc. and the Sarv Brahmin Mahasabha Association Tasmania, whose members and volunteers worked diligently to ensure a memorable celebration. Their participation underscored the unity and multicultural spirit that the Christmas Pageant embodies, reflecting Hobart’s commitment to inclusivity and community engagement.

The City of Hobart’s support was instrumental in facilitating the event, providing free parking and shuttle services to accommodate the large turnout. The pageant featured a diverse array of participants, including marching bands, schools, and multicultural groups, contributing to a vibrant and festive atmosphere.

The involvement of the Indian community in such a prominent event highlights the harmonious integration of diverse cultures within Hobart. It serves as a testament to the city’s dedication to celebrating multiculturalism and fostering a sense of belonging among all its residents.

As the festive season continues, the success of the Christmas Pageant stands as a reminder of the joy and unity that can be achieved through community collaboration and cultural celebration. The Indian community’s participation not only enriched the event but also strengthened the bonds within Hobart’s diverse society, setting a positive precedent for future multicultural engagements.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
