Nilesh (Nil) Dilushan, named the 2025 Northern Territory Young Australian of the Year, has made an inspiring journey from Sri Lanka to the heart of the NT’s community life. Arriving as an international student to study at Charles Darwin University, Nil has embraced every opportunity to contribute, grow, and lead.
Now a Senior Advisor for Education NT, Nil is at the forefront of tackling complex policy challenges, crafting solutions that make a real difference in the lives of Territorians. His role is a reflection of his drive to enhance public services while ensuring that the NT remains a place of opportunities for all.
Nil’s impact extends well beyond his professional sphere. He is the co-founder of two non-profit organisations, Young Professionals Rotaract Northern Territory and The Kindness Shake. These initiatives empower young people, foster leadership, and provide much-needed support in areas like financial literacy and substance abuse awareness. Programs such as FINSMART and Jumpstart exemplify the practical ways these groups are making a difference, with peer-to-peer guidance tailored to the needs of the Territory’s youth.
His dedication has not gone unnoticed. Recognised with awards including the Northern Territory Volunteer of the Year and the Chief Minister’s Youth Volunteer of the Year in 2023, Nil’s contributions highlight the power of service and community spirit. His story of overcoming cultural barriers and embracing a new home is a testament to the transformative potential of the Territory’s welcoming and close-knit environment.
Nil credits the NT’s unique lifestyle, its sense of belonging, and the genuine chance to make an impact for shaping his journey. His work, both professional and voluntary, continues to inspire and unite young people from diverse backgrounds, encouraging them to step forward and lead in their communities.
From a newcomer to a celebrated leader, Nil’s story is a shining example of what can be achieved through determination, community engagement, and a passion for making a difference.

Support Independent Community Journalism
Dear Reader,The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.
We operate independently.
Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.
When you support The Indian Sun, you support:
• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers
We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.
If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.
Please consider making a contribution today.
Thank you for your support.
