Candidate nominations for the 2024 NSW Local Government elections are now open. Aspiring local leaders should act quickly to ensure their names appear on the ballot papers for this pivotal democratic event. The nomination process, which officially commenced today, is being overseen by the NSW Electoral Commission. All prospective candidates must lodge their nominations by 12 noon on Wednesday, 14 August.
Successfully lodged nominations will be progressively published on the NSW Electoral Commission’s website starting from Thursday, 8 August. The final list of candidates, arranged in ballot paper order, will be available after the ballot paper draws on Thursday, 15 August.
Acting NSW Electoral Commissioner, Dr Matthew Phillips, highlighted the importance of timely submissions. “Late nominations and amendments are not permitted under legislation,” he stated. “Candidates should lodge their nomination early to allow time for our team to check the paperwork. This way, if there are any errors, candidates have a chance to correct them and still meet the nomination requirements.”
To assist candidates, the NSW Electoral Commission offers a range of resources, including webinars, drop-in sessions, online guides, and a comprehensive FAQ section on their website.
Dr Phillips also clarified the distinction between nomination and registration for electoral funding purposes. He stressed that a candidate’s name will only appear on the ballot paper following a valid nomination by the 12 noon deadline on 14 August. “Registration for electoral funding is a separate process,” he explained. “Candidates must be registered with the NSW Electoral Commission before accepting political donations or making payments for electoral expenditure. After 15 August, all nominated candidates who have not already registered will be deemed registered to accept donations and pay for their campaigns.”
Anyone with questions about the nomination process is encouraged to visit the NSW Electoral Commission website for more information.
Following the ballot paper draws on Thursday, 15 August, final candidate details will be published in ballot paper order at elections.nsw.gov.au.
