
People of all ages came together at Shree Swaminarayan Temple Gurukul on Sunday to mark the 12th International Day of Yoga, with this year’s theme highlighting the role of yoga in supporting healthy ageing.
The event, held on 21 June, centred on the theme “Yoga for Healthy Aging” and featured guided yoga sessions, breathing exercises, meditation and mindfulness activities aimed at promoting physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.
The programme was led by yoga instructor Dr Vidhi Sirohi, with support from temple committee members Ghanshyam Bavadiya and Kiran Bavadiya. Participants took part in activities designed to improve flexibility, mobility and overall health, while also encouraging relaxation and stress management.
Addressing attendees, Dr Sirohi spoke about the value of making yoga part of daily life, particularly as people grow older. She said regular practice can help individuals maintain their health, independence and quality of life while supporting both physical fitness and mental wellbeing.
The event also included discussions on healthy ageing, with organisers encouraging participants to consider lifestyle habits that contribute to long-term health. While yoga has long been promoted for its benefits in improving flexibility, balance and stress reduction, health experts generally advise that it works best when combined with other healthy practices such as regular exercise, a balanced diet and routine medical care.
Temple committee representatives thanked participants and volunteers for their involvement and encouraged members of the community to continue practising yoga throughout the year.
The celebration concluded with a pledge to promote yoga as a lifelong practice and to raise awareness of its potential benefits in supporting healthy and active ageing.
