ore than 100 people from diverse cultural backgrounds gathered at Lynbrook Community Centre to celebrate International Day of Yoga 2026, highlighting the role of yoga in promoting wellbeing and community connection.

The event was organised on Sunday by Saathi Multicultural Association of Australia Inc., which runs free yoga and meditation programs across Melbourne’s southeast.

City of Casey Mayor Stefan Koomen and Councillor Carolyn Eaves attended the celebration, which began with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony led by Mayor Koomen and Saathi founder and president Chanchal Kumavat.

Welcoming attendees, Kumavat said the event reflected Saathi’s commitment to creating opportunities for people from different backgrounds to connect through health and wellbeing.

“Yoga is not only about physical fitness. It is about bringing people together, creating harmony and supporting mental wellbeing in our communities,” she said.

Yoga instructor Komal Ghai led the session, guiding participants of all ages through a series of stretches, breathing techniques and mindfulness exercises aimed at promoting physical and mental wellbeing.

Addressing the gathering, Mayor Koomen praised Saathi’s efforts to build community connections through accessible wellbeing programs.

“Programs like these help create a sense of belonging and bring people together regardless of their cultural background,” he said.

“The diversity represented here today is one of our community’s greatest strengths.”

Kumavat, who was recently honoured with the Global Women’s Peace Award 2026, also acknowledged the contribution of the organisation’s volunteers and youth members, who helped deliver the event.

Mayor Koomen presented certificates of appreciation to youth volunteers Luvya Kumavat, Alex Sharma, Ajuni Ghai, Harkiran Ghai and Evyan Kumavat in recognition of their community service. Additional certificates were awarded to volunteers Anusha Srinivasan, Komal Ghai and Neha Sharma.

Following the session, attendees shared a community meal prepared by Saathi member Bharti Agrawal from Maru Bhoomi Ro Swad.

Organisers said the event reinforced the message of International Day of Yoga by encouraging healthy lifestyles, social inclusion and cross-cultural engagement.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
