Women across Tasmania’s North West now have access to a permanent public breast screening facility following the official opening of the new BreastScreen Tasmania clinic in Devonport.
The purpose-built clinic, located on Level 1 of the Devonport Community and Health Services Centre, has begun accepting appointments and is the first fixed public breast screening site in the North West region.
The Tasmanian Government says the new facility is intended to improve access to breast screening services by providing a centrally located option for residents who may previously have relied on visiting services or travelled further afield for appointments.
Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing Minister Bridget Archer said the clinic would help make screening services more accessible for communities across the region.
The facility includes a dedicated mammography screening room, patient amenities and new imaging equipment designed to support routine breast cancer screening. Its location within the Devonport Community and Health Services Centre also provides access to nearby parking and public transport links.
BreastScreen Tasmania offers free screening mammograms for women aged 50 to 74 every two years, the age group most strongly encouraged to participate in the national screening program. Women over 40 are also eligible to book a screening mammogram.
Health experts continue to emphasise the role of regular screening in identifying breast cancer before symptoms develop. Early detection can improve treatment options and health outcomes, although screening programs do not prevent cancer and are one part of broader breast health awareness.
The opening of the Devonport clinic comes as governments and health services seek to increase participation rates in cancer screening programs, particularly in regional communities where access can sometimes be more challenging.
Minister Archer said the new facility would provide year-round access to screening services and encouraged eligible women to check when they were due for their next mammogram.
Breast cancer remains one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among Australian women. Health authorities recommend regular screening for eligible age groups, alongside awareness of any changes in breast health that should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
