More than 70 community organisations across Queensland will share in over $500,000 in funding under Round 2 of the Celebrating Multicultural Queensland grants program, supporting cultural events scheduled for later this year.

The funded organisations are spread across the state and will deliver events between 1 July and 31 December 2026, including cultural festivals, community gatherings and intercultural sporting activities.

The program, delivered by the Crisafulli Government, has been structured into two $500,000 funding rounds each year to provide ongoing support for multicultural events across Queensland. Applications are also now open for events planned in the first half of 2027, with grants of up to $20,000 available for eligible organisations.

Events supported in the latest round include celebrations across regional and metropolitan areas, such as the Multicultural Festival on Thursday Island, Fiji Day Pasifika Multicultural Community Festival in Cairns, Townsville’s Greek Day Out, Chanukah festivals in Cairns and Townsville, the One Long Table Multicultural Food Festival in Chinchilla, and Mackay’s Global Grooves Festival.

Other funded events include the Taste of the World Cultural Festival in Rockhampton, Bundaberg’s Multicultural Fair, the Lockyer Valley Festival of Cultures in Gatton, South Burnett Multicultural Celebration in Kingaroy, the Multicultural Moon Festival on the Sunshine Coast, the Ukrainian Festival marking 35 years of independence in Brisbane’s south, PNG Independence Cultural Day in Logan, Solomon Islands Cultural Day in Ipswich, and the Afghani Festival on the Gold Coast.

Minister for Multiculturalism Fiona Simpson said the program continues to support locally led events that encourage participation and community connection.

“These grants help communities in every corner of Queensland deliver local festivals and events that bring people together, celebrate cultural heritage while building shared understanding,” Simpson said.

She said the government is focused on supporting grassroots organisations to run events that strengthen community ties and create opportunities for participation.

Applications for Round 1 of the 2027 Celebrating Multicultural Queensland program close on 12 July 2026, with successful applicants delivering events between 1 January and 30 June 2027.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
