Australian featherweight champion Tyrell Adams has been named Blacktown’s Sportsperson of the Year, capping a night that celebrated athletes, coaches, volunteers and officials from across one of Australia’s fastest-growing sporting regions.
The First Nations boxer from Lethbridge Park received the top honour at the 43rd Blacktown City Sports Awards, held at West HQ in Rooty Hill earlier this month before more than 300 guests.
Adams, who boxes with Boxfit Windsor, headed a field of finalists that included boxer Elisha Kumar and baseball player Ashton Kennedy.
The annual awards recognised achievements across community and elite sport, with more than 130 nominations received in categories ranging from junior and disability sport to coaching, administration and volunteering.
Olympic aerial skiing gold medallist Alisa Camplin AM addressed the audience, sharing stories from her sporting career and encouraging young athletes to pursue their ambitions while overcoming setbacks.
Blacktown City Mayor Brad Bunting said the awards reflected the depth of sporting talent across the local government area while recognising those who support community sport behind the scenes.
“We have many young athletes achieving great success and I am proud that Council provides this event so they receive the recognition they deserve,” Cr Bunting said.
He said the awards also acknowledged the people who make grassroots sport possible.
“It’s also a great way to honour the volunteers and officials who are the beating heart of community sport. Without them, there would be no sport,” he said.
Other major award winners included Jessica Middleton as Female Junior Sportsperson of the Year, Benjamin Spadaro as Male Junior Sportsperson of the Year and Greg Smith as Coach of the Year.
Para swimmers Chloe Osborn and Diesel Thompson were recognised as the senior and junior disability sportspersons of the year respectively, while The Ponds Parkrun was named Club of the Year.
The Blacktown Under-18 Female Brewer Shield Cricket Team claimed Team of the Year honours, Donna Dhu was recognised as Administrator of the Year, Elliana Henderson received Referee/Umpire of the Year, and Cynthia Morrison was named Volunteer of the Year.
Now in its 43rd year, the Blacktown City Sports Awards have grown into one of Western Sydney’s established community sporting events. Council has confirmed nominations for the 2027 awards will open later this year.
