Stories of courage continue to emerge from the tragic Bondi Beach shooting, where 13 innocent people lost their lives at a Hanukkah event on Sunday evening. In the chaotic aftermath of the attack, as panic erupted and shots rang out, personal trainer Amandeep Singh Bola made a split-second decision that defied every instinct for self-preservation. He ran towards the danger and it ended with him physically pinning one of the alleged shooters to the ground, helping police handcuff the man.

SBS News reports that on Sunday evening, after a work Christmas event, Bola had stepped out for a kebab, hoping to watch the sunset over the iconic beach. The peace shattered with what he initially dismissed as “pops.”

“I was just having a yarn with two other guys, we were just talking, and that’s when we heard all the pops and then people just started screaming and running like I’ve never seen before… just full on sprinting and everybody’s panicking,” he told SBS News.

Instead of fleeing, he ran towards the danger. He found one of the alleged shooters, later identified as Sajid Akram, and jumped on top of him. With the help of a police officer, Bola pinned the man down until officers could handcuff him.

“I jumped on top of him and grabbed his arms. The police officer helped me and said, ‘Don’t let him go.’ He put a handcuff around one arm, and I grabbed the other handcuff,” Bola said.

He also described the support of strangers during the chaos. “There were girls comforting each other, a French guy gave me coconut water, and two African men stayed by my side to make sure I was okay. That was the only comfort in it.”

On social media and elswhere, Bola has been praised for his heroic act—one that shows ordinary citizens can become extraordinary anchors in a crisis.

For Bola, the comfort was found in the circle of strangers who ensured he did not have to stand alone.
