Australian cricket fans will have a packed calendar this winter as the men’s team heads to the West Indies for a full-fledged Test and T20 series. The West Indies Cricket Board has locked in the itinerary, confirming Australia’s first Test tour of the Caribbean since 2015, with the added weight of a three-Test series—the first between these teams since the 2015-16 season.
The Frank Worrell Trophy, long a symbol of one of cricket’s most storied rivalries, will be on the line, kicking off in Bridgetown, Barbados on June 25. A rare sight awaits in Grenada, which hosts its first Test between these sides, followed by the finale in Jamaica.
The white-ball leg begins on July 20, with five T20s providing a crucial lead-up to next year’s T20 World Cup. The contests start in Kingston before moving to St Kitts for the final three games.
Ben Oliver, Cricket Australia’s Executive General Manager of National Teams, is pleased with the expanded tour. “Australia and the West Indies share a rich history, and we’re delighted the Test series has been expanded to three matches,” he said.
“The series will start the next World Test Championship cycle and, as we saw last summer, we will have to be at our best to retain the Frank Worrell Trophy. The additional T20 matches against a dynamic West Indies team will also provide a great opportunity to progress our preparation for the next T20 World Cup which is now only 12 months away.”
The tour promises plenty, from Australia’s push to dominate in red-ball cricket to a battle against one of the most explosive T20 sides in the world. For the West Indies, it’s a chance to show progress in both formats against a visiting team that hasn’t played a Test in the Caribbean for nearly a decade.
With the World Test Championship and T20 World Cup on the horizon, there’s plenty riding on every match. Cricket in the Caribbean just got a little more interesting.
