The Consulate General of India in Sydney has introduced an innovative initiative to strengthen trade and investment links between India and Australia. Spearheaded by Consul General Dr. S. Janakiraman, the initiative reflects a shared vision to deepen economic collaboration and create a platform for businesses from both nations to connect and grow.
Central to this effort is the newly launched Business Lounge, inaugurated on 1 July 2024 by Dr. Janakiraman and Mr. Warren Eric Kirby, MP and Co-Chair of NSW Parliamentary Friends of India. Located in Sydney’s central business district, the lounge offers a dedicated space for businesses to access resources, engage in discussions, and explore investment opportunities.
The facility is designed to cater to the needs of the business community, providing a range of services and amenities. These include professional advice from the Consulate’s Trade and Commerce team, access to a database of importers and exporters, and modern infrastructure such as workstations, high-speed internet, and versatile meeting spaces. The lounge is open to business visitors free of charge from Monday to Friday, with prior appointments required.
Dr. Janakiraman highlighted the initiative’s potential, describing the Business Lounge as a bridge for fostering stronger economic ties. “This facility supports the aspirations of Indian and Australian businesses to collaborate and grow together,” he said. Since its launch, the lounge has already attracted numerous exporters and importers, helping them advance their business objectives.
The initiative aligns with the broader goal of enhancing the strategic economic partnership between India and Australia. By fostering trust, creating trade opportunities, and encouraging innovation, the Consulate aims to contribute to the prosperity of both nations.
Businesses and stakeholders are invited to explore the opportunities offered by the Business Lounge. Registration is required, and professionals are encouraged to book appointments in advance for a seamless experience. More details can be found on the Consulate’s official website.
This initiative marks a fresh chapter in India-Australia relations, offering a practical and accessible platform for businesses to thrive in an increasingly interconnected global economy.

Support Independent Community Journalism
Dear Reader,The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.
We operate independently.
Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.
When you support The Indian Sun, you support:
• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers
We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.
If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.
Please consider making a contribution today.
Thank you for your support.
