Qantas will operate additional flights to Kangaroo Island during a three-day suspension of SeaLink ferry services in October, providing extra travel options for residents, businesses and visitors.
The airline has added services following discussions with the State Government about maintaining connectivity while SeaLink undertakes infrastructure works linked to the commissioning of its new ferry fleet.
SeaLink will temporarily suspend regular ferry services on Tuesday 20 October, Wednesday 21 October and Thursday 22 October.
During the closure, Qantas will operate an additional flight from Adelaide at 4.30pm on each of the three days, with return flights departing Kingscote at 5.40pm.
The additional services will operate alongside Qantas’ existing daily morning service from Adelaide, which typically departs at 9.30am. Afternoon services are already available on Mondays and Fridays.
More than 400 additional seats will be available to and from Kangaroo Island across the three-day period, giving passengers an alternative while the ferry service is unavailable.
The temporary ferry suspension is linked to infrastructure works being carried out as part of the transition to SeaLink’s new ferry fleet. The additional air services are intended to help maintain access to the island during the short period when regular ferry travel is disrupted.
Emily Bourke said the extra flights would help keep Kangaroo Island accessible to visitors and support local tourism businesses during the closure.
“Kangaroo Island remains open for business, and these additional flights will help visitors keep the island firmly on their travel plans,” Bourke said.
“This is a practical solution that supports local tourism operators and provides travellers with more options while ferry services are temporarily unavailable.”
Bourke also thanked Qantas for providing additional capacity during the ferry suspension.
With ferry services unavailable for three days, travellers planning to visit Kangaroo Island during the period will have the option of flying from Adelaide, alongside the additional services being offered by Qantas.
