Collie is steadily evolving, and with fresh funding supporting its growth, the town is set to thrive as a diverse economic hub. Three local projects have been awarded a share of $250,000 from the Collie Futures Small Grants Program, reflecting the region’s commitment to both preserving cultural heritage and nurturing economic opportunities for the future. The Cook Government’s continued investment in local business and tourism initiatives is laying the groundwork for a bright future for this town and its residents.

One of the key beneficiaries of this funding is the Leschenault Catchment Council, which has received a generous $100,000 grant for the Collie River Cultural Walk—Walking on Country project. This initiative aims to restore a 75-kilometre stretch of the historic Noongar cultural walk trail along the Collie River. This culturally significant path will provide a powerful connection to the land for both locals and visitors, offering a unique opportunity to explore the area’s history and culture.

The project’s primary focus is on the feasibility study that will explore the logistics and requirements for reinstating the trail, ensuring it can be enjoyed by generations to come. This initiative not only honours the region’s Noongar heritage but also aligns with Collie’s broader aim to increase cultural tourism. By connecting people with the natural beauty and history of the region, it promises to further establish Collie as a must-visit destination for those seeking authentic experiences.

Another key project receiving funding is the Collie Trails Lodge, a purpose-built short-stay accommodation facility. With a further $100,000 allocated for the refurbishment of a commercial building in town, the lodge will cater specifically to the growing demand for trails-based tourism. The town has long been known for its outdoor offerings, and with the right infrastructure in place, it is positioning itself as a centre for those keen on exploring the area’s natural landscapes. The Lodge will complement the broader diversification efforts, offering visitors a comfortable and convenient base from which to explore the vast array of trails Collie has to offer.

The investment in short-stay accommodation is part of the Cook Labor Government’s ongoing support for Collie’s tourism industry, particularly with the expansion of its Trails Town initiative. With significant upgrades already made to local trails, the Collie Trails Lodge will provide an essential service to the increasing number of tourists coming to experience the region’s scenic wonders. This project is another testament to Collie’s resilience, as it positions itself as a leading destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

Not to be overlooked is the new Muja Pizza Bar on Wheels mobile food business, which has secured a $50,000 grant. With Collie becoming a more attractive place to visit and work, the introduction of this mobile food venture will support the influx of people to the area, offering a convenient and mobile dining option for tourists, residents, and event-goers alike. It promises to become a staple of the local food scene, particularly during catered functions and tourism-related events, making it an important addition to Collie’s service offerings.

These grants are part of the Collie Futures Fund, an initiative designed to foster long-term economic sustainability in the region by supporting local businesses and not-for-profit organisations. With grants of up to $100,000 available to projects that can stimulate the local economy and meet community needs, this program plays a vital role in ensuring Collie’s successful transition as it moves away from traditional industries and embraces new opportunities.

Regional Development Minister Don Punch emphasised the importance of supporting local initiatives and diversifying the economy. “By backing the aspirations of this community in transition, whether that be a business idea or tourism initiative, we are unlocking opportunities that diversify and build resilience into the local economy,” he said. The minister also highlighted that through a combination of new industries and the growth of established businesses, the Cook Labor Government is building a strong foundation for the future of Collie.

Local MP Jodie Hanns, a vocal advocate for the region, expressed her delight in witnessing the impact of the Collie Futures Small Grants Program. “It’s been great to share in their individual journeys, and I look forward to seeing the latest grant recipients take this exciting next step with assistance provided by the Cook Labor Government. We are committed to continuing to work with the community to set up Collie for a strong future, and it is fantastic to see not only the direct benefits but also the benefits flow on to the community,” Hanns stated.

The town of Collie is undeniably undergoing a transformation. With a focus on sustainable growth, tourism, and cultural preservation, the grants from the Collie Futures Small Grants Program are just one part of a broader vision to build an economically vibrant, resilient, and welcoming community. The awarded projects reflect the diverse ways in which the region is embracing change, from cultural initiatives that celebrate its history to modern businesses that cater to a growing tourism market.

Collie’s ongoing evolution, supported by both local and government investment, shows the remarkable potential of this community as it looks ahead. With projects like the Collie River Cultural Walk, Collie Trails Lodge, and Muja Pizza Bar on Wheels, the town is investing in its future with optimism, fostering opportunities for both economic growth and cultural enrichment.

The focus on both economic diversification and community needs makes this funding not just an investment in infrastructure, but an investment in the people who call Collie home. As these projects progress, they will create new jobs, encourage further investment, and elevate Collie’s profile as a key player in Western Australia’s regional economy.

With the continued support of the Cook Labor Government, Collie’s future looks brighter than ever. The town’s journey towards economic diversification is a testament to its resilience, resourcefulness, and forward-thinking approach. As more projects like these come to fruition, Collie is poised to become a model for regional development that others can look to for inspiration.
