Geelong Line passengers are about to experience a much-welcomed boost in train services, as the new V/Line timetable is set to come into effect on Sunday, 1st December. The changes come as part of the Labor Government’s ongoing efforts to improve regional travel, offering smoother journeys and more frequent trains between South Geelong, Marshall, Waurn Ponds, and beyond.

This major revamp is made possible by the recently completed South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication, which has paved the way for extended services during the week. From December, commuters will have 68 new weekend services, with trains running every 20 minutes between 8 am and 9 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Additionally, 20 existing services will now be extended from Wyndham Vale all the way to Waurn Ponds, making it easier for passengers to plan their weekend travels.

Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams shared the excitement, saying, “We’re adding more than 60 new weekend services for Geelong Line passengers – making it easier for Victorians to get to where they need to go.”

Not only will Geelong see these improvements, but the Warrnambool Line is also getting a major upgrade. Starting Friday, 1st November, VLocity trains will begin operating on the line for the first time, offering more modern and reliable travel for passengers in the south-west. The introduction of a fourth weekend service will also bring added convenience for those using this route.

The upgrades are a continuation of the government’s broader election promise to deliver up to 200 extra weekend services across the regional rail network. The transformation follows extensive works, including the replacement of approximately 70,000 sleepers between Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool, duplication of eight kilometres of track, and upgrades to Marshall and South Geelong stations. In addition, a total of 67 level crossings have been removed or upgraded, further enhancing the safety and efficiency of the network.

Federal Labor Senator for Victoria Raff Ciccone commented on the benefits these rail upgrades are bringing to the region: “Our massive investment in rail upgrades across Victoria’s south-west is delivering huge benefits for local motorists and train passengers.”

Since the introduction of the regional fare cap last year, over 33 million train trips have been made, saving travellers more than $90 million in fares. With the new timetable offering even more flexibility and the added comfort of VLocity trains, it’s clear that the Government is serious about making regional travel more accessible and convenient for all Victorians.
