Children’s Week, running from October 19 to 27, promises to captivate children with a mix of entertainment and learning

Victoria’s Children’s Week 2024 is set to bring smiles to thousands of young faces across the state, with a wide variety of free activities designed to engage, educate, and entertain. The Allan Labor Government has backed over 200 events and activities, providing families with opportunities to connect and enjoy quality time together.

Minister for Children, Lizzie Blandthorn, visited the Richmond Community Learning Centre to acknowledge the efforts of local councils and not-for-profit organisations that have received more than $180,000 in grants. These funds will support a plethora of engaging activities, ranging from music and dance workshops to gardening, storytelling, and outdoor games. This year’s theme, focusing on children’s right to a clean and safe environment, brings an educational twist to the fun.

Children’s Week, running from October 19 to 27, promises to captivate children with a mix of entertainment and learning. One such initiative at Monbulk Creek by the Yarra Ranges Council will teach children about platypus habitats through hands-on experiences like water bug hunts and games designed to highlight the importance of waterway conservation.

In Richmond, kids will get the chance to feed chickens, plant seedlings, and learn about hygiene, food growth, and animal care at the local community learning centre. Meanwhile, Cheltenham Panthers Netball Club will offer a family day complete with children-versus-parent netball matches, professional umpires, and a fun-filled atmosphere including a sausage sizzle and live entertainment.

These activities are not only meant to engage children but also to celebrate their rights, talents, and achievements. Children’s Week 2023 saw over 40,000 children and families join in, and with more than 200 events scheduled this year, it’s shaping up to be another crowd-pleaser.

Minister Lizzie Blandthorn encouraged as many families as possible to come out and enjoy the festivities. “We’re supporting Children’s Week events right across Victoria. It’s a great chance to celebrate the achievements of Victoria’s children and to reinforce every child’s right to a clean and safe environment,” she said.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
