Tasmania’s retail sector has reached an all-time high, with data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealing retail trade in the state soared to a remarkable $722.4 million in August 2024. This figure marks a steady 0.11 per cent increase from the previous month, and a significant 2.95 per cent rise compared to August 2023. Tasmania’s growth places it second only to Western Australia, outpacing the national average growth rate of 2.6 per cent.

This upward trend in retail spending is a strong indicator of Tasmania’s economic resilience. Despite ongoing national challenges such as high inflation and interest rates, Tasmanians have continued to spend, demonstrating a buoyant consumer confidence that has benefited businesses across the state. Treasurer Michael Ferguson echoed this sentiment, noting the state’s continued growth amid challenging financial conditions, “Tasmanians still have the confidence to spend, which in turn gives our businesses the confidence to continue to employ and invest in Tasmania.”

Tasmania’s retail performance reflects not only consumer confidence but also the success of the state’s broader economic strategy. The Tasmanian Government’s 2030 Strong Plan has been instrumental in shaping policies aimed at sustainable growth, helping businesses thrive while ensuring the economy remains stable through fluctuating economic cycles.

The August record signifies a milestone in Tasmania’s ongoing economic development. As businesses continue to innovate and grow, supported by local spending, the state looks set to build on this momentum, driving further investment and employment opportunities.

With retail trade hitting new heights and confidence remaining high, Tasmania’s economy is proving to be robust, well-positioned for future growth, and reflective of strong leadership.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.
