Yagan Square, already a bustling hub of Perth’s urban scene, is set to become even more vibrant this Sunday, 6 October, with Jazz in the Square. Part of the Perth International Jazz Festival, this free event will feature some of Western Australia’s most talented jazz musicians, transforming the square into a lively, musical sanctuary for locals and visitors alike. The event, running from midday to 5 pm, is family-friendly and promises a fantastic mix of jazz styles, from gypsy and funk to hip-hop and folk, with no booking required.

Perth’s jazz scene has grown remarkably over recent years, and Jazz in the Square is a shining example of how music continues to bring people together. The line-up includes the energetic WA Academy of Performing Arts’ Django Ensemble, the genre-blending WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) with Zero Emcee, and the captivating Steve Hensby Band, amongst others. This carefully curated line-up showcases a mix of classic, modern, and boundary-pushing jazz, offering something for everyone, regardless of their familiarity with the genre.

Beyond the music, Yagan Square will also provide an opportunity to indulge in its growing selection of eateries. From Gangnam Korean BBQ and Hiss and Smoke Japanese to the Street Eats food market and the newly opened Stories, there’s plenty to tantalise the taste buds while soaking in the smooth jazz beats. Families and groups of friends can grab a bite and enjoy the vibrant surroundings, making it the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

The event builds on Yagan Square’s importance as a cultural and social meeting point in Perth, a space where the community comes together to enjoy food, entertainment, and art. Lands Minister John Carey remarked, “Jazz in the Square is a brilliant opportunity for families and music lovers to experience free, world-class jazz at the revitalised Yagan Square.” The Square’s recent hosting of the AFL Grand Final in partnership with 7Plus is part of the ongoing efforts to re-energise the space, with events like Jazz in the Square contributing to its transformation into one of Perth’s most exciting cultural hubs.

Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman highlighted the wider benefits of such events, emphasising, “Music and the arts bring so many benefits, from mental health, physical health, and social connection to economic development and jobs creation.” Jazz in the Square is a celebration of both music and community, offering a fantastic opportunity for people to connect, unwind, and enjoy the unique atmosphere that live music brings.

Whether you’re a seasoned jazz aficionado or just looking for a relaxing day out with friends and family, this event promises to hit all the right notes. With a diverse line-up of musicians and the delicious variety of food and drink on offer, Jazz in the Square is set to be one of the highlights of Perth’s cultural calendar this year.

So, grab a picnic blanket, settle in, and let the music wash over you as Yagan Square becomes the place to be this Sunday. Jazz may be the star, but the sense of community, good food, and the warm atmosphere make this a day not to be missed.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.
