A family outing turned to heartbreak when Vivek Bhatia and his young son Vihaan became the latest identified victims in a devastating sequence of events that have profoundly affected Melbourne’s Indian community. This past Sunday, the Royal Daylesford Hotel’s beer garden, a locale typically associated with joy and respite, became the scene of an unspeakable tragedy.

Vivek, a 38-year-old resident of Tarneit, and his 11-year-old son were spending time in Daylesford with their family when the tragedy occurred. Vivek’s wife, Ruchi, 36, and their six-year-old son, Abeer, were injured in the incident. Ruchi is currently fighting for her life in the intensive care unit at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, while Abeer, although in a stable condition, is dealing with injuries.

Emerging details have now linked this calamity with the earlier reported accident that claimed the lives of Pratibha Sharma, her partner Jatin, and their daughter Anvi. With the identities of the deceased now fully disclosed, the Bhatia family’s loss has been woven into the tragic incident that includes the passing of the Sharmas. The community, which had only started to process the initial shock, now finds itself engulfed in a compounded sorrow.

The Royal Daylesford Hotel, the unintended epicentre of this catastrophe, has transformed into a sanctuary of mourning. Visitors and locals alike have erected an impromptu memorial at the site, offering flowers and messages of condolence, uniting in a collective outpouring of grief.

The dual tragedies have inevitably sparked a broader discourse on road safety and preventive measures, with community leaders and concerned citizens demanding action to avert future calamities. This period of mourning has galvanised the community in Melbourne, as they engage in heartfelt reflection and support one another through these tragic times.

Daylesford, a town usually synonymous with healing and leisure, now faces the task of reconciling with the grim reality of recent events. The full revelation of the Daylesford tragedy, with the identities of all those lost now known, casts a shadow over the community. The Bhatia and Sharma families, touched by tragedy, have left a profound impact on a town known for its serenity. As the local community comes together, the memories of those lost are a reminder of the strong connections that can emerge in the face of hardship.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
