Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong will travel to India this week for the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and high-level talks with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, as Canberra and New Delhi continue expanding cooperation across trade, security and technology.
Senator Wong said the visit comes at a time of growing uncertainty across the Indo-Pacific, with the Quad remaining an important strategic grouping for regional stability.
“In these uncertain times, the Quad is a vital partnership – four nations working together to shape a peaceful, stable and prosperous future for the Indo-Pacific region,” she said.
The Quad brings together Australia, India, Japan and the United States. The grouping has increasingly focused on regional security, supply chains, infrastructure and disaster response amid wider geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific.
Senator Wong said the four countries were “delivering concrete outcomes on shared interests including maritime security, critical minerals supply, infrastructure development and disaster relief.”
While in India, Wong will hold the 17th Australia-India Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue with Dr Jaishankar.

The meeting is expected to cover defence ties, economic cooperation, strategic technology and education links, alongside broader regional security issues.
“Australia and India’s partnership has never been more consequential,” Wong said.
Australia and India elevated ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2020, with both countries deepening engagement across defence, trade, critical minerals and clean energy. India has also become one of Australia’s fastest-growing education and migration partners, with strong people-to-people links supported by the Indian diaspora community in Australia.
“As Comprehensive Strategic Partners, Australia and India are deepening cooperation in trade and investment, defence and maritime security, climate and energy transition, strategic technology, and education and skills; with an enduring social connection at the heart of our partnership,” Wong said.
The visit comes as Australia continues to strengthen engagement with Indo-Pacific partners amid rising competition in the region and growing concerns over supply chain resilience and maritime security.
“The Albanese Government will continue to strengthen Australia’s relationships and work even harder in new and existing coalitions like the Quad as we keep building Australia’s future in an ever less stable world,” Wong said.
