Australian households that missed Census night are being reminded they still have time to complete their 2026 Census forms, with more than 10 million households having already submitted their responses.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is encouraging households that have not yet completed the Census to do so as soon as possible, with support available for people who need assistance.
Emily Walter, Census national spokesperson, thanked households that had already participated and reminded others that the process remains open.
“We’d like to thank every household that has already completed their Census and remind everyone else that it’s not too late to participate,” Walter said.
The Census is compulsory, and the ABS said households that have not completed their forms may receive a reminder letter or a visit from Census field staff in the coming weeks.
Households can complete the Census online, including without having their reminder letter available. Those who prefer a paper form can contact the ABS on 1800 181 227 to request one.
Field Officers will also visit some households to deliver paper forms and remind residents who have not yet submitted their responses.
The ABS has support available for people who may have difficulty completing the form. Australians who would prefer to communicate in another language can call the Translating and Interpreting Service on 131 450 and ask to be connected with the Census Contact Centre.
The agency is encouraging people to participate because Census data is used to help governments plan and deliver services, while businesses and community organisations also use the information to understand changing population needs.
Each response contributes to the national picture collected through the Census, including information about Australia’s population, households and communities.
The ABS is also reminding residents to take care when providing personal information. People who receive a visit from someone claiming to be a Census Field Officer can ask to see their identification card before providing information.
The latest participation tally shows that more than 10.0 million Australian households have already completed their Census, although the ABS says participation remains open for households that have yet to respond.
For people who have missed Census night, the message from the ABS is that it is still possible to complete the form and access assistance where required.
