Fans are gearing up for another major football event in the nation’s sporting capital with the FIFA Women’s World Cup set to take place.

The 2023 tournament will be the first time the FIFA Women’s World Cup has been held in the Southern Hemisphere and the first with 32 competing teams, bringing thousands of international players, trainers and fans to Melbourne.

AAMI Park will host six games of the FIFA Women’s World Cup between 21 July and 8 August, including one Matildas group game and two matches in the round of 16.

To ensure players and fans have the best experience at the Women’s World Cup, the Andrews Labor Government is investing more than $25 million in enhancements to AAMI Park, an official press release said.

The works are delivering upgrades to the lighting and video screens, as well as player, corporate and spectator facilities.

Hosting the FIFA Women’s World Cup provides an opportunity for fans to experience the very best of women’s soccer, celebrate the diversity of competing nations and inspire the next generation of players, the release said.

The internationally significant event also provides an opportunity to put Melbourne on the world stage through a global broadcast to more than 750 million viewers.

The Government’s support for the FIFA Women’s World Cup underpins its ongoing commitment to increase the number of women and girls participating in sport and active recreation, from grassroots through to leadership roles.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. With platforms such as YouTube videos, we have been able to engage in different forms of storytelling. However, the past few years, like many media organisations around the world, it has not been an easy path. We have a greater challenge. We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution. Do make a DONATION NOW so we can continue with the volume and quality journalism that we are able to practice.
