A cross-border music collaboration between Melbourne and Chandigarh is preparing for a Raksha Bandhan release later this month, with support from Creative Arts Victoria to promote cultural diversity and heritage through music.

The project is part of the Dil Soul Melbourne series and is scheduled for release in mid-August ahead of Raksha Bandhan on 28 August. The campaign is aimed at audiences across Australia and India, including Punjabi and Hindi-speaking communities in Melbourne, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Gujarat.

The release centres on a Raksha Bandhan-themed song and forms part of a broader eight-song album that will continue to be promoted through cultural and community events over the coming year. Planned appearances include celebrations associated with Garba, Janmashtami, Diwali, Dussehra, Gita Mahotsav and community events extending into the 2027 festive season.

Project organiser Nawal Moudgil said the campaign is designed to connect audiences across both countries while creating opportunities for businesses involved in Australia-India trade. The promotional campaign is expected to include content across Instagram, YouTube and Facebook, alongside distribution through music channels.

Music and cultural projects that connect Australian and Indian communities have become increasingly visible in recent years, particularly in cities with large Indian diaspora populations. Public arts funding has often been directed towards projects that encourage cultural participation, multilingual artistic work and community engagement.

The organisers say the campaign is intended to celebrate Raksha Bandhan while highlighting cultural connections between Australia and India through contemporary music and digital media.

The Raksha Bandhan song has already been released on YouTube as part of the Dil Soul Melbourne series and can be viewed at YouTube.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
