Karthick Thanigaimani, a CFA volunteer firefighter from Point Cook, stands ready to serve.

A Point Cook volunteer firefighter is preparing to swap emergency call-outs for a gruelling charity challenge, climbing 28 floors in full firefighting gear to raise money for cancer research, mental health services and support for emergency service workers.

Karthick Thanigaimani will take part in the Firefighter Stair Climb on 12 September, tackling the ascent while carrying around 25 kilograms of protective equipment. The annual event aims to raise $1 million for the Lifeline Australia, the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and the 000 Foundation, while also raising awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder among emergency service personnel.

Thanigaimani, who volunteers with the Country Fire Authority and has previously spoken about the sense of purpose volunteering has brought to his life, said he hopes the challenge will encourage people to support causes that touch thousands of Australian families.

“On September 12th, I’ll be climbing 28 floors in 25kg of kit and helping to raise $1 million supporting our beneficiaries, Lifeline, Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation and 000 Foundation,” he said.

“This is in addition to supporting PTSD. I kindly request you to help me step up to fight cancer, depression and suicide.”

The climb has become one of Australia’s best-known fundraising events for firefighters, with participants from emergency services across the country completing the demanding stair ascent while wearing full operational gear, replicating the physical demands they face during emergencies.

Funds raised help provide crisis support, cancer treatment and research, and mental health services for first responders, many of whom experience repeated exposure to traumatic incidents throughout their careers.

Thanigaimani has called on members of the community to contribute whatever they can and share the campaign with others, saying every donation will help support organisations providing lifesaving services to Australians.

Donations can be made through his official Firefighter Stair Climb fundraising page.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
