Victorian upper house MP Moira Deeming has resigned from the parliamentary Liberal Party and will sit on the crossbench as an independent, marking the latest chapter in one of the most divisive sagas in the party’s recent history.
The announcement came on Monday as Victoria’s political focus remained fixed on Labor’s leadership transition following Premier Jacinta Allan’s resignation.
In a statement posted on social media, the Western Metropolitan Region MP said she had resigned from the parliamentary Liberal Party but remained committed to representing her constituents.
“Today, I have resigned from the parliamentary Liberal Party and will sit with the crossbench as an Independent,” Deeming said.
“My focus has always been, and will continue to be, on representing the needs and concerns of everyday Australians.”
She said she had been elected “to fight for freedom, fair laws, and families” and remained committed to seeing Labor defeated, citing what she described as “endemic corruption, crushing debt, and the rising crime crisis.”
Opposition Leader Jess Wilson confirmed receiving Deeming’s resignation in a brief statement.
“This morning I received the resignation from the Parliamentary Liberal Party from Moira Deeming,” Wilson said.
Deeming was seen sitting with crossbench members during question time in the Legislative Council.
The resignation follows months of escalating tensions within the Victorian Liberal Party. Earlier this month, the party’s state executive voted to strip Deeming of Liberal endorsement for the November state election after she refused to apologise over allegations made against former opposition leader Matthew Guy, which police found to be unsubstantiated. Deeming had also abandoned legal action against the party in a last-ditch effort to retain her candidacy, but the bid ultimately failed.
Deeming’s relationship with the Liberal leadership has been strained since 2023, when she was expelled from the parliamentary party room after attending and helping organise a rally outside Parliament that was also attended by neo-Nazis. She successfully sued then opposition leader John Pesutto for defamation after he publicly linked her with extremist groups. The Federal Court found Pesutto had defamed Deeming, leading to her eventual readmission to the parliamentary party in late 2024.
Her latest departure effectively ends her time within the Liberal parliamentary team and leaves her to serve the remainder of the parliamentary term as an independent crossbench MP.
The move comes just months before Victorians head to the polls in the November state election, adding another challenge for Wilson as she seeks to present a united opposition after a prolonged period of internal division.
