The Melbourne Konkan Community (MKC) has marked a new chapter in its community activities with the successful staging of its inaugural volleyball tournament, attracting more than 130 participants and supporters to Derrimut Sports Stadium on 31 May.

The event featured 10 men’s teams and two women’s teams, with players competing throughout the day in a series of closely contested matches. Organisers said the tournament was designed to encourage participation, strengthen community ties and provide an opportunity for families and young people to connect through sport.

Dadabada Smashers claimed the men’s title after a strong tournament campaign, while Kudla Queens secured victory in the women’s competition. Both teams impressed spectators with their performances, with the finals among the standout moments of the day.

Beyond the results on the court, the tournament highlighted the role community sporting events can play in bringing people together. Participants described the day as an opportunity to meet new people, build friendships and feel more connected to the wider Konkan community.

“We loved it. We want more of this,” one attendee said, while another noted that the event helped them meet more people and feel part of the community.

The tournament formed part of MKC’s ongoing efforts to create opportunities for social engagement and active participation among members of all ages. Community groups across Australia increasingly use sporting and cultural events to strengthen connections among families and younger generations, particularly in multicultural communities.

MKC acknowledged the contribution of Sports Secretary Jolwin Rebeiro and the organising team, whose efforts helped deliver the event. The committee was also recognised for its work in coordinating activities aimed at fostering community engagement throughout the year.

The community organisation thanked the Jolly Boys Team for sponsoring the tournament, describing their support as an example of the collaborative spirit that helps community initiatives succeed.

Following the strong turnout and positive response, MKC plans to explore further sporting and community-focused events in the future, with organisers hoping to build on the momentum generated by the tournament’s debut.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
