Members of the Queensland Parliament joined representatives of the Consulate General of India in Brisbane on 2 June for a curtain raiser event marking the lead-up to the International Day of Yoga, which will be observed globally on 21 June.

Held at Queensland Parliament House, the gathering highlighted yoga’s role in supporting physical health, mental wellbeing and healthy living, while bringing together parliamentarians and community representatives ahead of the annual observance.

The 2026 International Day of Yoga is being celebrated under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, drawing attention to the practice’s potential contribution to maintaining mobility, balance and overall wellbeing across different stages of life.

Organisers said the event was intended to raise awareness of yoga as a holistic approach to health and encourage broader participation in activities planned later this month.

Since the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga in 2014, the occasion has grown into a global event observed in countries around the world through community sessions, public demonstrations and educational programmes.

Advocates of yoga point to research suggesting regular practice can support flexibility, strength, stress management and mental wellness. Health experts, however, generally note that yoga is most effective when incorporated into a broader healthy lifestyle that includes physical activity, balanced nutrition and appropriate medical care where required.

The Queensland Parliament House event marks the beginning of local celebrations leading up to this year’s International Day of Yoga, with further activities expected to take place across Queensland and Australia in the coming weeks.

This year’s focus on healthy ageing reflects growing international interest in preventative health measures and ways to support quality of life as populations age, with yoga continuing to be promoted as one option for maintaining physical and mental wellbeing.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.
