India has appointed senior diplomat Nagesh Singh as its next high commissioner to Australia, with the career foreign service officer set to take charge in Canberra following his current posting in Bangkok.

Singh, a 1995-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, is serving as India’s ambassador to Thailand and will succeed Gopal Baglay. The appointment places a seasoned hand at the centre of one of India’s most important strategic and economic partnerships in the Indo-Pacific.

His diplomatic career spans a wide range of postings and responsibilities. Before moving to Bangkok, Singh served as chief of protocol at the Ministry of External Affairs from July 2018 to October 2022, a role that involved managing high-level visits and formal state engagements.

Earlier assignments include a term as consul general of India in Atlanta between June 2015 and June 2018, followed by a stint as officer on special duty to the vice president from September 2012 to June 2015. From February 2010 to August 2012, he worked as director in the Ministry’s Pakistan-Afghanistan-Iran division, handling a portfolio that sits at the core of India’s regional diplomacy.

Singh has also represented India at its Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York and served at the Indian embassy in Paris, adding multilateral and European experience to his profile.

Academically, he holds a graduate degree in economics from the University of Delhi and completed his post-graduate studies at the Delhi School of Economics.

His appointment comes at a time when India-Australia ties continue to deepen across defence, education, trade and people-to-people links, with Canberra playing a growing role in New Delhi’s regional outlook.
