The next round of the Multicultural Grassroots Initiative has opened, giving community groups fresh support to run local events, cultural programs and projects that bring people together. The grant program sits within the Government’s broader Modernised Multicultural Grant Program, which is being rolled out over four years as part of the response to the Multicultural Framework Review.
Grassroots organisations can apply for funding between 10,000 and 20,000 dollars for events, or between 10,000 and 80,000 dollars for programs that promote intercultural understanding and community participation. Proposals that create links across cultures or help build stronger neighbourhoods are encouraged, and organisations can apply for more than one project if they are working across different locations.
Applications for this round will remain open until 5 December 2025.
The opportunity will operate over two years, from 2024–25 to 2025–26, and aims to support multicultural community-led groups with grants of up to 100,000 dollars over that period. Activities can include cultural festivals, building upgrades, equipment, or new sports and arts programs that help people meet, learn from one another and feel a sense of belonging.
The program is designed to strengthen the capacity of smaller community organisations and ensure the process is accessible for groups working at the local level. More details and application information are available through the Multicultural Grassroots Initiatives portal.

Support Independent Community Journalism
Dear Reader,The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.
We operate independently.
Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.
When you support The Indian Sun, you support:
• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers
We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.
If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.
Please consider making a contribution today.
Thank you for your support.
