Melbourne Museum will host the Australian debut of Barbie®: The Exhibition from 28 November 2026, in partnership with Mattel, Inc., with tickets on sale from World Doll Day.
Created by the Design Museum in London, the exhibition traces the evolution of Barbie from her first appearance in 1959 to her status as a global cultural figure. It brings together more than 250 objects, including 150 dolls, fashion pieces, vehicles, architecture models and accessories that chart the development of the brand across generations.
Among the key exhibits is a rare first edition Barbie from 1959, hand-painted and dressed in a black-and-white bathing suit. Visitors will also see early innovations such as the first Barbie designed to ‘move’, a Talking Barbie prototype and the popular Totally Hair™ Barbie, alongside designs that reflect changing ideas around diversity and representation.
The exhibition explores Barbie’s development across design fields including fashion, furniture, architecture and transport, presenting how the brand has evolved alongside broader cultural and social shifts since its creation.
Lynley Crosswell, CEO and Director of Museums Victoria, said Barbie’s long presence in popular culture offered a clear view of changing design trends and social attitudes over time, adding that visitors would find the exhibition engaging and visually rich.
Victorian Minister for Creative Industries Vicki Ward said the exhibition would bring a major international showcase to Melbourne, highlighting Barbie’s role in inspiring creativity across generations.
Tim Marlow, Director and CEO of the Design Museum, said the exhibition had already drawn strong public interest in London and would continue to reach new audiences in Melbourne.
Paul Faulkner, SVP and Managing Director Asia Pacific at Mattel, said Barbie had remained a cultural reference point since 1959, with the exhibition offering audiences a closer look at its design history and global influence.
The exhibition is presented as a partnership between the Design Museum and Mattel, Inc., with access to the Barbie archives in California and input from brand historians and archivists. Originally designed by Sam Jacob Studio and curated by Danielle Thom, it maps the evolution of Barbie across decades of design and cultural change.
