The Kurunjang Recreation Reserve in Melton came alive on 18 October as young players from across Victoria competed in what organisers described as the biggest football event ever hosted by the Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre (KMCC). The KMCC Juniors Football Tournament brought together 27 teams, marking a proud moment for Melbourne’s growing South Asian sporting community.
The tournament was presented by Satellite City United Soccer Club in partnership with KMCC Australia Melbourne. The inaugural ceremony began at 11 am and was attended by Cr Steve Abboushi, Mayor of Melton Council, and Member of Parliament Steve McGhie, who were the chief guests for the day. Their presence highlighted the importance of community sport in fostering inclusion and teamwork among local youth.
The event was led by KMCC Chairman Shiyas Khalid, who praised the efforts of everyone involved. He extended his appreciation to the Satellite City United Soccer Club team, including President Frank Moskaljuk, Secretary Stephanie Moskaljuk, and Treasurer Tanya, for their support in making the tournament possible. “We are grateful to the club’s management and volunteers who worked tirelessly to host such a wonderful event,” Shiyas said.
He also acknowledged the contribution of KMCC’s Executive Committee members—Hilal, Shameer OP, Rishal, Saleem Venkitta, Ajees Makkel, Haris Kodur, Riyas OP, Illyas, Shabeeb, Mujeeb, Jafar, Shamsu, and Ajmal—along with other well-wishers who supported the event. Although CGO Sushil Kumar could not attend due to personal reasons, organisers noted his continued encouragement for KMCC’s community activities.
The day saw spirited matches, friendly competition, and enthusiastic crowds, reflecting the strong local interest in football among children and families. Many parents described the tournament as an ideal platform for nurturing discipline and teamwork in young players, while strengthening ties between Melbourne’s diverse communities.
Following the success of the football tournament, KMCC is planning to host a T10 cricket tournament early next year, continuing its efforts to promote youth engagement through sport.
