Jetstar will launch the first-ever direct flights between Hobart and Newcastle from 2 December 2025, marking a boost in air connectivity between Tasmania and New South Wales.
The seasonal route, supported by the Tasmanian Government and Hobart Airport, will add more than 26,000 seats over the summer period. The initiative aims to attract more visitors from one of Australia’s largest regional markets while making travel easier for Tasmanians heading north.
Tourism, Hospitality and Events Minister Jane Howlett said the new service would bring welcome economic benefits. “Aviation access is vital to Tasmania, with strong capacity and frequent services ensuring travel remains affordable and convenient,” she said. “Direct routes provide benefits for travellers and growth opportunities for destinations. We are proud to work with Jetstar and Hobart Airport to support this new route and unlock opportunities for Tasmanians and visitors alike.”
The Hobart–Newcastle connection has been made possible through the state’s Aviation Attraction Fund, which aims to attract and support new routes that strengthen tourism and trade.
Hobart Airport’s Chief Operating Officer, Matt Cocker, said the team had worked closely with Jetstar to secure the flights. “The new direct flights to Newcastle will unlock the largest population area in Australia that we’re not yet flying to directly,” he said. “This is great news for Tasmania’s tourism and hospitality businesses, with well over one million new potential travellers across the greater Newcastle and Hunter region. Travelling direct instead of via Sydney will save passengers time and money.”
Tourism Tasmania CEO Sarah Kingston Clark said the route connects Hobart to a market of 1.4 million people across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter Valley. “This is a regional market that has already shown strong appetite for what Tasmania has to offer, with further strong potential for growth,” she said. “Visitors arriving via this service are expected to contribute around $41.5 million to the Tasmanian economy over the summer season.”
Jetstar will operate three return flights a week—on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays—until 21 April 2026. Tickets are now available through Jetstar and travel agents.
