John Lister tells Indian Australians: You deserve peace, safety and respect

Our Government is introducing more powers for police to deal with people who whip up hate and fear against Victorians because of who they are or who they pray to. Our Anti-vilification and Social Cohesion Bill 2024 will also protect more Victorians from vilification, introduce new criminal offences for serious vilification, and strengthen existing civil protections against vilification: John Lister, Member for Werribee

Victorian MP John Lister has written to Indian Australians in his electorate of Werribee, assuring them of his support following weeks of controversy over anti-immigration rallies and comments made about migrants of Indian heritage.

“Many members of our Indian diaspora community have spoken to me about their distress following the recent anti-immigration protests across our country, and comments made by Liberal Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price regarding immigrants of Indian heritage,” he wrote in his letter to residents.

Lister said his message was clear: the Indian community is not only welcome but an integral part of Victoria’s story. “As your Local Member of Victorian Parliament, I am on your side. As a fellow Wyndham resident, the contributions of our multicultural community—including our Indian community—is not lost on me,” he said.

He pointed to the many contributions that Indian Australians bring to his electorate, from local businesses to cultural events. “From our Indian-run hospitality and other businesses, to the wonderful festivals, events, and ceremonies that take place throughout the year—Wyndham is strengthened by our multiculturalism. Everyone who has immigrated to this country—no matter how early or how recent—has done so for one purpose: to build a good life for themselves and their families.”

Reflecting on his time as a teacher, Lister recalled how students of diverse backgrounds often shared their families’ migration journeys with him. “As Australians, it should make us proud to know that so many people have chosen to call this place home,” he wrote.

He noted the Victorian Government’s recent moves to strengthen protections against hate and vilification. “The Allan Labor Government stands with all Victorians, and we condemn the appalling behaviour that members of the Indian community have been subjected to in recent weeks,” he said, referencing the Anti-Hate Taskforce convened by Premier Jacinta Allan.

“Our Government is introducing more powers for police to deal with people who whip up hate and fear against Victorians because of who they are or who they pray to. Our Anti-vilification and Social Cohesion Bill 2024 will also protect more Victorians from vilification, introduce new criminal offences for serious vilification, and strengthen existing civil protections against vilification.”

For Lister, the message is one of solidarity and belonging. “Whoever you are, whoever you love, whoever you pray to—you are welcome here in Victoria. You deserve peace, safety and respect. We know multicultural Victoria is not part of the problem. It is part of the solution, and the promise of multiculturalism is so much stronger.”

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.
