A new hybrid imaging system has been installed at the $1.5 billion Footscray Hospital, with health officials saying it will help clinicians deliver faster and more precise care for patients requiring complex procedures.

The Canon Alphenix Insight Angio-CT Scanner combines CT imaging with image-guided intervention capabilities, allowing doctors to carry out scans and procedures in the same room. Hospital teams say this setup can reduce delays between diagnosis and treatment, particularly in urgent cases where timing is critical.

The technology enables interventional radiologists to capture detailed images during surgical procedures, supporting earlier detection of issues and more targeted treatment. By bringing both imaging methods together, clinicians can avoid moving patients between different departments for separate scans.

Health officials say the system is expected to improve care for patients undergoing highly specialised procedures, including treatment for internal bleeding, blocked blood vessels, certain cancers, and small lymphatic vessel leaks. Some procedures may also be completed in shorter timeframes, which can reduce exposure to anaesthesia.

Located close to operating theatres, the new imaging suite allows surgical teams to respond quickly as cases develop. Hospital staff have described it as particularly useful for patients with complex or rapidly changing conditions.

The Footscray Hospital, which opened earlier this year, has been positioned as part of broader efforts to expand access to public healthcare in Melbourne’s west.

Minister for Health Harriet Shing said the investment reflects a focus on equipping public hospitals with advanced tools for patient care. Harriet Shing said the new technology supports clinicians in making faster decisions and delivering safer treatment.

Member for Footscray Katie Hall also welcomed the installation, saying the hospital’s facilities should match the level of care provided by its medical staff. Katie Hall said the addition of world-first technology aligns with the hospital’s role as a major health hub for the region.

The announcement comes amid ongoing debate about healthcare funding and infrastructure investment, with differing views on how resources should be allocated across the system.
