The skies over Broadwater Parklands exploded in a riot of colour on Saturday as the Indian Community of Gold Coast (ICGC) hosted its much-loved ‘Gold Coast—Festival of Colours—Holi’. From early morning until mid-afternoon, families, friends, and festival-goers soaked in the music, dance, and energy that define this exuberant tradition.

Holi, a festival that turns strangers into friends with a handful of bright powder, saw attendees dive into the Colour Play Zone and Colour Fun Run, gleefully covering each other in eco-friendly powders. The laughter was as vivid as the hues, with children and adults alike chasing, tossing, and embracing the messiness of the occasion.

Adding to the spectacle were pulsating dance battles and performances that swung between high-energy Bollywood numbers and traditional folk routines. A live DJ kept the tempo soaring, ensuring feet stayed in motion and spirits remained high.

For those who preferred their thrills on a plate, a string of food stalls dished out the best of Indian street fare. The tangy crunch of chaats, the comforting warmth of curries, and the cooling embrace of lassi offered a flavour-packed journey straight to the heart of India.

As colours flew and music pounded, the festival highlighted its deeper purpose—bringing people together. The organisers were thrilled with the turnout, calling the day a celebration of unity. “Holi is a festival that transcends barriers, and seeing people from all backgrounds coming together was truly heartwarming,” said an event coordinator.

Manish Saini, President of ICGC, expressed his gratitude, describing the festival as a beautiful reflection of community spirit. “Seeing thousands of smiling faces enjoying Holi fills us with immense pride,” he said. “This is why we do it.”

Pushpinder Oberoi, Patron and Advisor of ICGC, echoed the sentiment. “Holi is about love, friendship, and embracing diversity,” he said. “It’s an honour to bring this tradition to the Gold Coast.”

Local MPs also joined the festivities, with Cameron Caldwell sharing his appreciation for the event, calling it a wonderful celebration of the multicultural Gold Coast. Hermann Vorster, meanwhile, took a more playful approach, challenging his followers to unlock a video of his dance moves. “If I hit 200 likes, I’ll post this hilarious video,” he teased.

As the powders settled and the sun dipped, festival-goers left with rainbow-streaked faces and memories of a day where fun had no boundaries. The countdown to next year’s splash of colour has already begun.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.
