Bunjil Place is set to host the world premiere of Bunyi Bunyi Bumi, a production that boldly replaces outdated tales of trade and Empire with themes of truth and resilience. Running from 20 to 23 February 2025, this extraordinary collaboration unites Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Tamil, and Indonesian artists to create a vivid and immersive performance.
The production thrums with energy, blending dance, body percussion, and mesmerising visuals. Co-directed by renowned choreographer raymond d. blanco and celebrated professor of dance Dr Priya Srinivasan, the work also features contributions from choreographers Waangenga Blanco and Alfira O’Sullivan, Acehnese maestro Murtala, and dancer Tyrel Dulvarie. Visuals by conceptual artist Vernon Ah Kee add another layer of richness to the experience, making Bunyi Bunyi Bumi a powerful fusion of cultures and artforms.
Merindah Donnelly, Co-CEO of BlakDance, described the performance as a celebration of resilience and identity. “This work rethreads connections across the Indian Ocean, weaving powerful choreography and cross-disciplinary storytelling to address the impacts of globalisation and colonisation. The artists involved bring an extraordinary depth of cultural perspective to the stage.”
The production is made possible through partnerships with BlakDance, Asia TOPA, and Arts Centre Melbourne. Mayor of the City of Casey, Cr Stefan Koomen, expressed pride in hosting the premiere, noting the importance of bringing such a compelling and culturally rich event to the local community.
Bunyi Bunyi Bumi invites audiences to experience the interconnectedness of cultures through dance and storytelling, transforming the stage into a space of remembrance, resistance, and celebration. This world premiere promises to be a momentous occasion for the arts, blending rich histories with contemporary expression.
