On the weekend of 26 and 27 October, Burswood Park in Wwestern Australia, sparkled as thousands flocked to the Diwali Mela 2024. This joyous Festival of Lights brought together families from all walks of life to revel in Indian traditions, dazzling performances, and culinary treats. The atmosphere was electric, with vibrant stalls offering everything from spicy street food to henna art, while traditional dresses and handicrafts captivated festivalgoers.

As the sun set, nightly fireworks lit up the sky, adding to the spectacular celebration. Beyond the festivities, attendees found practical travel advice, courtesy of Smartraveller, the Australian Government’s trusted travel resource. Representatives were on hand to guide those inspired by Diwali’s spirit towards overseas journeys, covering everything from passports to health precautions.

Festival-goers like Kavyashree praised Smartraveller’s updates, saying, “I use Smartraveller all the time for destination advice. It keeps my family informed and prepared.” Similarly, Shraddha highlighted the travel insurance guide, which simplified her decisions for safe family travel.

Tips for future travel included essential reminders: double-check visa requirements, pack travel insurance, be culturally aware, and take extra care with solo trips. Smartraveller, the festival’s quiet star, offered more than advice—it sparked confidence for adventures ahead, from Indian temples to bustling markets worldwide.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
