US president-elect Donald Trump has announced a shake-up set to stir the corridors of Washington. As part of his new administration, Trump plans to establish a Department of Government Efficiency, with Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy at the helm. Their mission? Cut down bloated federal bureaucracy, rein in spending, and push for a leaner, more accountable government.
This department, referred to by Trump as “DOGE” (an acronym reminiscent of the popular cryptocurrency Dogecoin), is set to become what he calls “The Manhattan Project of our time.” According to Trump’s statement, the aim is to root out “massive waste and fraud” that reportedly contributes to an annual $6.5 trillion spend on federal bureaucracy.
Musk, often outspoken on government inefficiency, reportedly stated, “This will send shockwaves through the system.” He envisions a government that’s as efficient as his Tesla factories, aiming to save taxpayer dollars by making the federal apparatus less cumbersome. Ramaswamy, known for his conservative views on reducing government intervention, brings a business-minded approach that Trump believes will breathe new life into an entrenched system.
Trump’s plan goes beyond mere cost-cutting. The DOGE initiative will seek guidance from private sector experts, aiming to create an “entrepreneurial approach to government,” per the statement. The new department will partner closely with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget, all with the goal of pushing structural reform to make Washington work harder—and smarter—for the American people.
The mission is clear: by July 4, 2026, a trimmed-down government, celebrating efficiency and accountability, is set to emerge. This date is symbolic, as it marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, a milestone Trump believes should be celebrated with a government closer to the people.
Supporters within Trump’s circle suggest that Musk and Ramaswamy’s appointment could lead to long-overdue changes. Skeptics, however, question the practicality of such a drastic overhaul. Nonetheless, Trump’s confidence is unwavering: “With Elon and Vivek driving change, I am confident they will succeed.”
