As Multicultural Health Week approaches from 2 to 8 September 2024, families across New South Wales are encouraged to celebrate culture through food. This year’s theme focuses on packing vibrant, nutritious lunchboxes that not only boost energy but also contribute to long-term health. With a spotlight on the importance of vegetables and fruits, the campaign aims to lower the risk of chronic illnesses, including heart disease and cancer, through everyday food choices.

The concept is simple: a well-packed lunchbox can make a world of difference. By including a variety of vegetables and fruits, families can ensure their lunchboxes are both tasty and nutritious. Even frozen and canned options are highlighted as cost-effective and healthy alternatives. The campaign also emphasizes the importance of staying hydrated by choosing water as the main drink, while also offering tips on keeping lunch safe and cool throughout the day.

Joining the campaign this year is community champion and one of Australia’s favourite chefs, Adam Liaw, who brings his expertise to the table with multicultural family lunchbox recipes for school, work, or a day out. Adam shares his excitement about being part of the initiative, saying, “I’m delighted to be part of Multicultural Health Week this year. Coming from a migrant family, I understand the unique challenges and barriers that multicultural communities may experience in accessing food and practising healthy eating. Whatever your background or culture, the way you eat at home can easily be your inspiration for healthy eating and living.”

The statistics underscore the urgency of this message. With only 4% of adults and 6% of children in NSW meeting their daily vegetable intake, there is a clear need for change. Considering that children consume roughly a third of their daily food intake at school, the importance of a well-balanced lunchbox cannot be overstated.

Multicultural Health Week 2024 invites everyone to join the conversation and get involved. Whether it’s trying out new recipes, sharing tips with friends, or participating in upcoming events, this week offers a chance to make a meaningful impact on family health.

Coordinated by the NSW Multicultural Health Communication Service, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Cancer Institute NSW, this initiative has been a staple since 2009, continuously working to address the unique health needs of culturally and linguistically diverse communities across the state.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
