On the sacred occasion of Guru Purnima, the North Queensland Hindu Community Inc. (NQHC) hosted a heartfelt celebration at their Centre located at 12 Yoolantie St, Vincent. The event, held on Saturday, commenced at 7 PM and drew a warm gathering of devotees, all eager to pay homage to their spiritual guides.

The evening began with a serene ambiance as Ashwini, Meera, and a group of dedicated volunteers adorned the photos of revered Gurus with beautiful decorations. The atmosphere was filled with reverence and devotion, as participants chanted praises and reflected on the profound teachings of their spiritual leaders.

Highlighting the significance of Guru Purnima, Kate delivered an inspiring presentation about her Guru, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar of the Art of Living Foundation. She spoke passionately about his tireless efforts and contributions to the community, emphasising the transformative power of his teachings.

Dr. Gandhi, a respected member of the community, shared insights on addressing health issues faced by the First National community. His talk shed light on the importance of medical services and the holistic approach to wellness that integrates traditional wisdom with modern healthcare.

The evening also showcased the talents of the youth, as children melodiously sang bhajans they had learned from the NQHC Poorna Vidhya teachers. The NQHC Poorna Vidhya program is instrumental in imparting cultural knowledge, Vedic lessons, devotional songs, and prayers to children in Townsville every fortnight. Their performances were a testament to the rich cultural heritage being preserved and passed on to the next generation.

The celebration culminated in a soulful Aarti, performed by the devotees, enveloping the Centre in an atmosphere of spiritual bliss. The event concluded with the distribution of Prasadam, allowing everyone to partake in the divine blessings.

Guru Purnima at the NQHC Centre was not just an event, but a journey of spiritual enrichment and community bonding. It highlighted the essence of Guru-Shishya tradition and underscored the importance of coming together in devotion and service.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
