The Djerring Hub in Flemington witnessed a momentous occasion on 6 July 2024, as HWPL (Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light) joined the Somali Day Australia Festival as a special guest. During the event, HWPL and Somali Community Inc. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), solidifying their dedication to peace education and collaborative community efforts in Victoria.

The event was supported by Victoria Police, the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC), the Australian Somali Football Association (ASFA), and the Moonee Valley Council. Distinguished attendees included David Southwick MP, Trung Luu MLC, Evan Mulholland MP, Richard Welch MP, Andrew Crisp AM APM, Vivienne Nguyen, and senior Victoria Police members, such as Acting Commander Darren Paterson. Community leaders like Ibrahim Hassan, State Manager for Victoria at MCCA, and Qiniso Dube, President of Africa Day Australia Inc., were also present. Other notable attendees included Yasseen Musa, Vice Chairman of the Eritrean Jeberti Community, Fartun Farah, Chairperson of the East African Women’s Foundation, Awatif Taha from the Sudanese community, and various local community members.

The signing of the MOU marked a formalisation of the collaboration between HWPL and Somali Community Inc. This agreement aims to bolster efforts in peace education, youth engagement, and community development across Victoria. The shared goals and mutual support between the two organisations aspire to build a more cohesive and harmonious society.

Mr Farah Warsame, President of Somali Community Inc., was recognised for his dedication to promoting peace as he received his certification as a Peace Educator during the event. He recently completed the HWPL Peace Education Teacher’s Education (PETE) programme. An HWPL representative stated, “Reflecting the commitment of both HWPL and Somali Community Inc., this certification aims to equip community leaders with the knowledge and tools to promote peace and understanding.”

In March 2024, HWPL’s youth division, the International Peace Youth Group (IPYG), collaborated with Somali Community Inc. to host a successful youth empowerment workshop at the Djerring Hub. The workshop provided young individuals with valuable insights and skills, aiming to inspire the next generation of peacebuilders.

Looking ahead, HWPL and Somali Community Inc. plan to expand their peace education initiatives, foster youth engagement, and organise joint community events across Victoria. Their goal is to build a model of multicultural harmony and collaboration for future generations.
