The widespread outage, linked to cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, has caused major disruptions across banks, supermarkets, telecommunications, and other airports worldwide. The issue has been traced back to CrowdStrike’s ‘Falcon sensor,’ a security software installed on numerous business computers, causing systems to crash and display the infamous “blue screen of death” (BSOD).
CrowdStrike has acknowledged the problem, stating, “CrowdStrike is aware of reports of crashes on Windows hosts related to the Falcon sensor. Symptoms include hosts experiencing a bugcheck or blue screen error related to the Falcon sensor. Our engineering teams are actively working to resolve this issue and there is no need to open a support ticket.”
The outage has impacted payment systems globally, with many customers unable to use Apple Pay or tap their cards at terminals in major retailers such as Coles and Woolworths. Although some EFTPOS systems are still operational, the disruption has caused significant inconvenience.
Airports are among the hardest hit, with airport check-ins severely affected. Virgin Australia has resumed boarding flights at Sydney Airport after an earlier ground stop, but passengers should still expect delays. Melbourne Airport has confirmed the ongoing global technology issue and has urged passengers to check with their airlines for the latest updates.
In the United States, the Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg is monitoring technical issues at Frontier Airlines, which have led to cancellations and delays. The Federal Aviation Administration had paused Frontier’s departures across the U.S., but the ground stop has since been lifted. Frontier Airlines attributed the issue to the same Microsoft outage affecting other companies. Despite the lifted ground stop, Frontier has cancelled 131 flights and delayed 223 others, impacting nearly 30% of its schedule.
As the situation continues to evolve, businesses and travellers are urged to follow official channels for updates. CrowdStrike is working to resolve the issue and has promised regular updates on their website.
