Imagine hitting the open road, exploring the vast beauty of the Northern Territory (NT), and having a shot at winning a million dollars. The Million Dollar Road Trip NT is set to entice local and interstate travellers to the Territory with this very promise.
Launched in collaboration with the Caravan Industry Association of Australia, this initiative aims to boost tourism and support local businesses by offering self-drive travellers the chance to win $1 million cash. Running from May to September 2024, the campaign hopes to bring significant economic benefits to the NT’s tourism sector, valued at over $860 million annually.
Travellers participating in the Million Dollar Road Trip NT need to stay at participating caravan parks, visit local NT Visitor Information Centres, or make purchases with participating tourism experiences or attractions. These actions will enter them into a draw not only for the grand prize of $1 million but also for runner-up prizes, including $10,000 cash plus a $500 fuel voucher and 19 other $500 fuel vouchers.
Chief Minister Eva Lawler emphasised the myriad reasons to visit the Northern Territory, from the famous Million Dollar Fish competition to the allure of road-tripping through unique landscapes. “There’s nowhere better in the world to do a road trip than the Territory—so get ready to make plans to get out and explore what makes the Territory great,” said Lawler. She affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the tourism industry and invigorating the local economy.
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Joel Bowden highlighted the campaign’s potential to inspire travellers to explore beyond the usual routes and experience the NT’s outback adventures. “The Million Dollar Road Trip will encourage travellers to choose the NT for their next drive holiday, incentivise them to explore further off the beaten track,” Bowden stated, expressing enthusiasm for welcoming new visitors.
Caravan Industry Association of Australia CEO Stuart Lamont praised the NT as a premier driving destination, rich with historical, natural, and Aboriginal experiences unique to the region. He encouraged Australians to escape the winter chill and discover the Territory’s offerings, noting that caravanners and campers significantly contribute to local economies across the NT.
The Million Dollar Road Trip NT is expected to engage over a million Australians and attract at least 5,000 unique competition entries.
