Townsville’s Youth Sector stands united for Youth in 2024 with cross-sector partnerships working collaboratively to shape positive futures for young people.

Dylan Sparrow, Local Level Alliance Facilitator from Mercy Community has worked tirelessly to bring together the community service sectors in recent years with sub-groups focused on key action areas including Workforce Solutions and Youth.

“Cross-sector partnerships and support are so important in our community. The Youth sub-group is the largest working group in Townsville and has representation from Homelessness Providers, Youth Services, Employment, Mental Health, and Youth Justice,” Mr Sparrow said.

Working collaboratively on our collective challenges and elevating the voices of youth in our community is important for helping young people to thrive. It’s no secret that young people face significant obstacles in our community to achieve a sustainable livelihood with Youth Unemployment and Homelessness contributing factors, on top of the housing crisis and limited public transport.

This Saturday’s Townsville Youth Conference is being held at Townsville Stadium at Annandale and will offer an opportunity for young people to have a voice in the future of Townsville. The conference is presented by Townsville City Council and Townsville Youth Council and is free for young people to attend.

A Townsville City Council spokesperson said the organisation was proud to be supporting the city’s young people.

“We’re thrilled to be bringing the Townsville Youth Conference to Townsville Stadium this year. This program will encourage participants to be involved in consultation, sharing ideas, and cross-collaborating with their peers for a full day of activities,” the spokesperson said.

“Council is proud to be transforming Townsville into a city where every resident has a sense of belonging, especially our talented and hardworking young people.”

With Youth Week just one month away (7-13th April), activities and expos are in development with key service providers and interest groups. Youth Reset Founder, Jasmine Healy-Pagán is hosting a Youth Day on the 9th of April as part of Townsville’s 2-week long Festival of Wellness with free workshops, expos, and events being held throughout the city.

Townsville Youth Foyer, led by Mission Australia will be open in mid-2024 providing Housing, Education, Employment, Health and Wellbeing and Social Connections and Civic Participations for 40 young people for up to two years.

With so many amazing initiatives focused on Youth this year the Youth Alliance is prioritising projects that showcase the resilience and commitment of Townsville’s Young People and asking the community to share their good news stories to influence positive change in the lives of our future generations.

Support Independent Community Journalism

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun exists for one reason: to tell stories that might otherwise go unheard.
We report on local councils, state politics, small businesses and cultural festivals. We focus on the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community with care, balance and accountability. We publish in print and online, send regular newsletters and produce video content. We also run media training programs to help community organisations share their own stories.

We operate independently.

Community journalism does not have the backing of large media corporations. Advertising revenue fluctuates. Platform algorithms change. Costs continue to rise. Yet the need for credible, grounded reporting in a multicultural Australia has never been greater.

When you support The Indian Sun, you support:

• Independent reporting on issues affecting migrant communities
• Coverage of local and state decisions that shape daily life
• A platform for small businesses and community groups
• Media training that builds skills within the community
• Journalism accountable to readers

We cannot cover everything, but we work to cover what matters.

If you value thoughtful reporting that reflects Australia’s diversity, we invite you to contribute. Every donation helps us maintain the quality and consistency of our work.

Please consider making a contribution today.

Thank you for your support.
