Unity and harmony: Abu Dhabi unveils first Hindu temple

At the heart of Abu Dhabi, a remarkable event unfolded on 14 February, marking a significant milestone in the cultural and spiritual landscape of the Middle East. The BAPS Hindu Temple, a magnificent structure inspired by millennia of tradition, was inaugurated, signifying a bridge of unity and friendship between India and the United Arab Emirates. This historic occasion was graced by notable figures including His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, and His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence.

The land for this architectural marvel was generously donated by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President and ruler of Abu Dhabi, showcasing a gesture of goodwill that transcends borders and cultures. Guided by the spiritual leadership of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, this temple stands as the first traditional Hindu stone temple in the Middle East, embodying the principles of cultural inclusivity, interfaith harmony, and community collaboration.

Upon arrival, Prime Minister Modi was greeted by a diverse assembly of community members and religious leaders, highlighting the temple’s role as a beacon of unity. The prime minister’s participation in a Vedic ceremony, paying homage to the seven Hindu deities enshrined under the temple’s spires, further underscored the inclusive spirit that the temple aims to foster. This act of reverence was mirrored globally, with thousands participating in the grand arti ceremony, reinforcing the temple’s message of universal compassion, respect, and understanding.

Prime Minister Modi’s inscription of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’—the world is one family—into a piece of stone at the temple, captures the essence of this monumental project. It’s a testament to the vision and collaborative spirit that brought this temple to life, serving not only as a place of worship but as a center for community engagement and cultural exchange.

In his keynote address, Prime Minister Modi lauded the UAE for its role in creating a “golden chapter in the history of humanity” through its support for the temple. He expressed confidence that the temple would usher in a new era of faith, hope, and unity, bringing people together in harmony and collaboration.

His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, in his blessings, emphasised the temple as an abode of love, peace, and harmony, advocating for personal contributions towards nurturing these ideals. His call to serve humanity, underscored by humility and the divine power of harmony, resonated deeply with the attendees and viewers worldwide.

His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahyan echoed the sentiments of unity and pride, thanking Prime Minister Modi and His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj for their pivotal roles in the temple’s creation.
