Sydney gears up for a magnificent display of pyrotechnics to welcome the New Year, as Foti Fireworks International’s team, led by the venerable Fortunato Foti, puts the final touches on what promises to be an unforgettable evening. With over 8.5 tonnes of fireworks, meticulously linked to 15 computers and spread over 25 kilometres of wiring, the city is set to be bathed in a kaleidoscope of colours.
The preparation for this grand event has been a colossal task, involving a dedicated team of 60, working tirelessly over 12 days to set up the necessary equipment on barges, iconic landmarks like the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House, and atop five city buildings. This year’s display features a dazzling array of hues including bright white, peach, lime, silver, gold, violet, yellow, burnt orange, pink, and blue, alongside crowd favourites like colour-changing fireworks and other surprises.
At the heart of this spectacle is a family tradition spanning seven generations. Fortunato, joined by 15 family members, including his children and extended family, brings a passion undimmed by his 27 years at the helm of Sydney’s New Year’s Eve celebrations. His commitment to innovation ensures each year’s show surpasses the last, a sentiment echoed in his belief that each year’s display is the best they’ve ever done.
This year’s event also places a significant emphasis on its musical accompaniment, with fireworks choreographed to dance along with the music. The 9pm “Calling Country” display, an original soundtrack produced by Nooky and 18YOMAN, blends anthemic hip hop with traditional First Nations sounds. The midnight show, set to a custom 3-part soundtrack by THE SWEATS, promises a sensory feast with a mix of driving beats, electronica, and choral elements.
The event is not just a visual and auditory delight but also a logistical marvel. It features fireworks launched from 184 locations on the Harbour Bridge, water-based platforms across the harbour, and city rooftops, culminating in over 80,000 pyrotechnic effects. The displays include unique shapes, new pastel and neon colours, and 36,000 ground-based effects, creating a spectacle that transcends the typical fireworks show.
