Back in 2021, our magazine shared the incredible story of Kaya Kumar, a nine-year-old cricket prodigy. Her viral video showcasing dedicated backyard practice sessions garnered a staggering 50,000 views and caught the attention of notable figures like former Australian cricketer Ian Healy. The burning question then arose: What fuelled Kaya’s deep passion for cricket?
Fast forward two years, and Kaya Kumar continues to impress with her exceptional skills and unwavering commitment to the sport. From smashing records at just 10 years old to her current achievements at 11, Kaya’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary.
In a stunning display of cricketing prowess, Kaya etched her name into the record books at the tender age of 10. With an unparalleled performance, she smashed the world record for the season by amassing a staggering 1,326 runs and taking 60 wickets.
Representing the prestigious Parramatta district and its affiliated clubs, this young prodigy has truly captured the essence of the sport.
Under the spotlight as captain of the Sydney West team, Kaya’s leadership proved instrumental in their historic victory at the State Championship. This triumph marked the first-ever title for the team since its inception, with Kaya emerging as the highest wicket-taker and playing a pivotal role by contributing 26 runs and capturing 4 crucial wickets during the Grand Finals.
Kaya’s achievements did not stop at the state level. Selected to represent the U12 NSW state team, she was appointed as the Vice-Captain for the National Championship held in Darwin.
Combining her impressive leadership skills with sheer talent, Kaya played a pivotal role in securing the coveted championship. Surpassing expectations, she not only fulfilled her role as Vice-Captain but also emerged as the top aggregate scorer for NSW, boasting an extraordinary strike rate exceeding 130 per cent.
The cricketing sensation’s success extended beyond representative cricket, as she showcased her mettle in the U12 Division 1 boys’ cricket. Outshining her peers, Kaya claimed the top scorer title with an impressive tally of 303 runs. Furthermore, her commendable performance in the U14 girls’ division saw her receive the highly-coveted Player of the Year award.
With an exceptional average of 78.57 per cent, she not only scored over 550 runs but also proved her prowess as the leading wicket-taker, sporting the best bowling average throughout the competition.
Recognising Kaya’s outstanding achievements, the Parramatta District Cricket Association (PDCA) bestowed upon her the prestigious Junior Cricketer of the Year Award for girls. This accolade serves as a testament to her unwavering commitment and relentless pursuit of excellence.
Remarkably, Kaya’s journey was not without its share of twists. Despite starting the season with a disappointing duck (0), the young prodigy never lost faith. Her perseverance and determination led to an astonishing turnaround, resulting in an impressive four-digit run tally that left spectators astounded.
Among her many extraordinary accomplishments, one milestone stands out prominently. In a historic feat, Kaya became the youngest girl in the world to score a century. Against U14 girls, she remained unbeaten at an incredible 111 runs off just 67 balls, leaving spectators and opponents dumbfounded by her masterful performance.
Not limited to cricket alone, Kaya also established herself as the leading scorer in basketball within the state, cementing her status as a versatile athlete.
Alongside her sporting endeavours, she also nurtures a deep interest in music, particularly the piano and euphonium. Balancing her time between the cricket field and the melodies of these instruments, Kaya showcases her multifaceted abilities and demonstrates that true talent knows no boundaries.
For someone so young, asked how she has this unwavering determination, Kaya quips, “If you beleive, you will achieve.”
