In the lead up to the polls, both ruling Labor Party and Opposition Liberal Party say they will boost support for multicultural media outlets in Victoria.

Labor says it will guarantee at least 15 per cent of spending from all Victorian government campaigns is directed to multicultural media outlets, tripling the current requirement for multicultural media spending. “This support will ensure multicultural communities see and hear important health, safety and emergency messages, while giving multicultural media outlets the revenue certainty they need to continue serving their communities.”

Labor has also promised to provide $1.5 million for a dedicated multicultural media grants program. “The grants will support multicultural media outlets with the rising cost of printing, helping them to invest in new equipment and employ more staff.”

Meanwhile Opposition leader Matthew Guy said, “A Liberals and Nationals Government will increase the minimum percentage of State Government department and agency advertising expenditure allocated to multicultural media and communications from 5 per cent to 12 per cent in the first year, and then 10 per cent for the remainder of the term.”

Guy said, “The initial 12 per cent will assist our culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) media outlets, including our new and emerging communities, with the increased costs and challenges associated with providing their service. Each Department will have designated CALD media units to ensure the advertising allocation is exclusively within CALD media.”

Acknowledging the role of multicultural media outlets throughout the pandemic in delivering important public health messages and keeping communities informed through challenging times, Andrews said, “With the growing costs of paper and production, it’s becoming harder and harder for news outlets to keep up. Labor understands the importance of keeping multicultural media outlets strong, ensuring our media landscape continues to reflect the many communities who have helped shape the modern Victoria we know today.”

On his part, Guy said, “This commitment will ensure our multicultural communities remain engaged with the broader community and provide them with the knowledge to participate fully in local activities.”
