There are many benefits to being part of a strong, local community. Our communities provide valuable support networks in case we ever need help, and provide us with a sense of belonging. Good communities are able to rally around members when they need help, and this can include anything from offering support in a difficult time to raising funds for charitable causes. A community fundraising event is a great way to use the reach of your local network to benefit others, including those who aren’t a part of your community.

Whether you’re raising money for a local cause or helping contribute to larger fundraising efforts, harnessing the power of your community is a great way to raise more money. However, there are a lot of challenges involved with planning such an event that you’ll need to consider before you get started.

Choosing a Space for the Event

To begin planning your community event, you’ll need to work out a suitable space where it will be held. To raise the most funds possible, you need plenty of guests, which means a large venue is required. While you might not have suitable space in your home or local meeting place, there are other solutions available.  Simply search event space Melbourne to find a list of available options close by.

When choosing a venue, your first thought should be towards the capacity. Does the venue have enough space to hold the amount of guests you predict will be attending? Overcrowding a venue can be dangerous, and may also go against the terms of service that you agree to when signing the rental contract.

You should also be considering the location of the venue and its proximity to your community. As a community focused event, you’ll naturally want it to be close enough for everyone to attend. If people have to travel far, people are far less likely to show up, which means you’re probably not going to raise as much money.

The Aims of the Event and its Budget

Before progressing through the planning stage, think about what you actually hope the event will achieve. Is there a specific fundraising target figure that you’d like to reach? Perhaps you don’t mind how much is raised as long as everyone has a good time. Whatever your aims are, you need to clearly define them and set out a clear objective for the event. This will be the basis of your planning, helping you form your budget and decide what else you need.

The budget is another crucial piece of the event planning puzzle. A larger budget means you can provide more food and drink, host more guests and book a bigger and better venue. However, great events don’t have to be expensive. Even if your budget is small, it can still be a success, and it’s also easy to waste large budgets if you’re not careful.

For a charity fundraiser, your event may have to be self-funded, but it’s possible to use some of the profits from the event to cover costs. You just need to ensure you get the balance right and are transparent with your community over how the event is funded.

Fundraising

Of course, the most important aspect of any fundraising event is how you’ll be collecting donations. Charging ticket prices is one option, although free events will likely have a larger turnout and potentially more donations if you get creative. The type of fundraising you choose will likely depend on the aims of the event and the overall theme. Will you be providing games? Maybe a raffle or silent auction? Don’t forget to invite local businesses and media for sponsorship and advertising opportunities.
