Footscray Community Arts Centre’s (FCAC) Board is implementing a new shared leadership model comprising an artistic director (AD) and executive director (ED) to support the future artistic and business direction of the organisation.
This new structure is set to underpin the development of the centre’s 2020-2024 strategic plan, support the future needs of the artists and local community, and be responsive to changes within the broader arts industry.
“The decision by the FCAC Board to change the leadership structure was made in close collaboration with the current Director / CEO and General Manager,” said Board Chair Jason Rostant said.
“It was made in the context of undertaking major strategic projects, including a future arts precinct study, becoming a registered NDIS provider, and the development and delivery of the upcoming Due West Arts Festival.”
The shared leadership roles of AD and ED will have equal leadership responsibility in the organisation. The AD will be responsible for developing the artistic direction and framework underpinning FCAC’s program, including further developing FCAC’s reputation in the local, national and international arts sectors as a leader in community engaged arts practice.
The ED will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of the framework for FCAC business, operations, governance and strategy including the management of core funding relationships. Both roles will report directly to the Board through the Chair.
The existing Director / CEO and General Manager roles will become redundant once the shared leadership positions have been recruited. Recruitment for the AD role will commence from Monday 29 July, and the recruitment for the ED role will commence from Monday 12 August. Current Director / CEO, Martin Paten will not be part of the new model going forward and will conclude in his role on Friday 6 September when he leaves to take up a new role as Manager Arts and Culture with the City of Greater Geelong. The current General Manager, Robyn Gawenda will act in a higher duties role until both positions are finalised.
“The FCAC Board acknowledges and thanks Martin and Robyn for their leadership throughout these important discussions. Martin’s departure will be deeply felt by FCAC’s staff and communities, and we wish him very well,” Mr Rostant said.
“The Board and leadership team are excited about the changes before us, and are confident that the new structure will serve the organisation and community well in the next phase of FCAC’s journey. With this new leadership structure in place, FCAC will have the capacity to support an emerging vision, program and business direction with our staff, communities and artists into the future,” he said.
