Meets with SME staff at The Indian Sun Diwali Dinner

The Indian Sun Diwali dinner sponsored by WorkSafe was held at Docklands on 19 October, and drew over 100 guests including 60 small to medium businesses. As part of Work Safe’s Health and Safety month, this is the first time WorkSafe has stepped up initiatives to closely interact with the Indian community.

The event was attended by prominent members of the community including City of Yarra CEO Vijaya Vaidyanathan, community leader Nitin Gupta, IEC president Vinay Sharma, jury members Sanjay Jain and Nessan Naidoo.

Michael Devlin, a multidisciplinary inspector, was the guest speaker at the event. He has worked in OHS for 25 years in a variety of roles from sports and recreation, timber manufacturing, to event management. Devlin has worked as an insurance risk assessor for 7 years.

Devlin spoke in length about how workers get hurt on the job every day and how employers have a duty to keep their employees safe in the work place.

Devlin stressed the need for employers to “provide a safe and healthy place to work; provide induction and training, instructions, supervise workers and tell WorkSafe if a serious injury happens,” he said. Most significantly, Devlin explained how all Victorian workers, including part time and casual, are able to make a workplace injury claim if they are injured at work.

At the event, Sanjay Jain of IEC jury announced the list of finalists to the 8th annual IEC Awards. The detailed list and profiles will be released in the next edition of The Indian Sun.

Dear Reader,

The Indian Sun is an independent organisation committed to community journalism. We have, through the years, been able to reach a wide audience especially with the growth of social media, where we also have a strong presence. With platforms such as YouTube videos, we have been able to engage in different forms of storytelling. However, the past few years, like many media organisations around the world, it has not been an easy path. We have a greater challenge. We believe community journalism is very important for a multicultural country like Australia. We’re not able to do everything, but we aim for some of the most interesting stories and journalism of quality. We call upon readers like you to support us and make any contribution. Do make a DONATION NOW so we can continue with the volume and quality journalism that we are able to practice.

Thank you for your support.

Best wishes,
Team The Indian Sun
